Mass Housing

To achieve scale and speed, mass housing was the preferred option in the decades of the 1950 to the 1970s – a period of rapid population growth and urbanization globally. Mass housing hence is a concept of housing development that is publicly funded and administered for low-income families.

Mass housing programmes often fail as the buildings do not respond to the social and cultural needs of the people. Government and public sector agencies are ignorant of how man wants to live. Also Mass housing has never been a brand statement or flagship project of a real estate developer.

The overall approch should not be "Housing the masses" rather it should focus on "Massing the houses". The design of the spaces, the way people live and interact with each other - these adaptations have to be analyzed, and design has to dealt with, keeping in mind who the end user would be.
