Reconsidering Residual Spaces: ‘A boon or Bane for the city?’

This paper is a contribution towards raising the awareness of, considering the residual spaces in the designing process to play a vital role in enhancing the urban landscape, such that there is nothing as residual which needs to be relooked, rethought and redesigned.

The Research concerns the Classification, uses and meanings of residual space in creating confused landscapes. . As a consequence they are universally neglected. Hence the research also supports the idea that they can be recognized, avoided and defined during the initial designing process.

“Flyovers”-Infrastructural barrier or a potential opportunity for knitting the city fabric.

This paper attempts to review the unforeseeable possibility of activities that occur
naturally under the flyovers initiated by local community free from the forced, organised, structured assumptions of the designer, focusing on case studies from few Indian cities. This paper contributes first to further identify the negative impacts of leftover spaces, and secondly possible activities to be considered in developing these spaces to benefit surrounding communities gearing towards sustainable cities in Indian context.

The Transformation Of Use, User, And Event In Shaping A Space- Case: Revdanda, Alibaug.

Urban design is a term that possesses a wide spectrum of meanings and since it is a derived term, it cannot be defined as one single entity but encompasses an entire process, an approach, an abstract concept that ‘shapes a space’. The evolution of Revdanda reflects the entire phenomenon of collision of habitus in context to the use, user, space and thus witness transformation which is evident in urban fabric, human setting and micro level.

An approach to Urban design Theory in the Indian context

This paper discusses the concept of urban design approaches adopted in history by focusing on the urban design theories in order to develop a new approach relevant in today’s Indian context. The purpose of this study is to resolve the changes in urban design theory, and to reconsider diversified approaches in these theories by explaining it in an inter-disciplinary manner. Therefore; the objective of this study is twofold: (1) to explain conceptual evolution of urban design theories in planning history with reference to paradigm shifts, (2) to take a theoretical position on the new theory to be adopted.

Conservation of Old Settlements- Case: Dhoraji, Gujarat.

Old buildings hold a town together and establish a continuum between past, present and future at a time when continuity is a scarce commodity. A place without old buildings is like a person without memory. This paper brings out the importance of Old buildings as cultural symbols which are an important and moving part of the social documentation of the country and a fascinating story of change and development over several hundred years. These should not be allowed to get into ruins. The genuine threat to character and the steady loss of the environment of old buildings should be prevented.
